PROCTORVILLE — It wasn’t about how but when.

Both teams had six hits but Ashland got their hits at the right time as they beat the Fairland Dragons 5-3 on Monday.

“We were competitive. We were in the game. We just needed a couple of key hits,” said Fairland coach Bryan Ward.

Ashland pitcher Evan Yongue struck out 10 and walked one as he allowed six hits.

Fairland pitchers Collin Damron and Adam Taylor combined to allow Ashland to six hits.

Ashland (14-7) scored three runs in the top of the third inning to snap a scoreless tie.

Jake Hall walked and Evan Cox and Logan Salow singled for a run. Cade O’Bryan then singled home two runs.

Fairland (10-6) answered with two runs in the bottom of the inning.

Luke Phillips, Kyle Sowards and Matt Aliff all singled for a run and Josh Ross hit a sacrifice fly.

The Tomcats got what proved to be the winning run in the fifth when Salow singled, moved up on a passed ball, stole third and scored on O’Bryan’s sacrifice fly.

Fairland scored a run in the bottom of the inning. Phillips and Sowards singled to put runners on the corner and then Phillips scored on a double steal attempt.

Phillips was 2-3 and Sowards 2-4 to lead the Dragons.
