Smooth soulful tunes will soon fill the Ohio University Southern Mains Rotunda in Ironton as the OUS Council on Diversity and Inclusion participates in Jazz Appreciation Month by hosting a concert featuring jazz musician Tim Warfield Jr.

The event, set for April 12 at 7 p.m., is in collaboration with Jazz Alive, a non-profit organization based in Cincinnati dedicated to the promotion and advancement of American jazz.

Robert Pleasant, OUS director of enrollment and student services, said he has heard Warfield play, and the community is in for a treat.

“This event gives jazz lovers a great excuse to hear the music they love live,” Pleasant said. “But it also provides an opportunity to introduce an exciting genre of music to those less familiar with jazz.”

According to a press release from OUS, Warfield is a native of York, Penn., who began studying alto saxophone at 9 years old. He attended Howard University in Washington D.C. for two years before leaving to lead and co-lead groups in the central Pennsylvania and Baltimore/Washington areas.

Warfield has made many television appearances, including the Today Show and Bill Cosby’s You Bet Your Life, the press release stated.

Warfield will be joined by Gregory A. Artry Jr. on the upright bass, pianist Dan Karlsberg and percussionist Steve Whipple on drums.
