HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Power of the Purse is proud to present “Bring Girls on the Run to Cabell-Wayne Counties.”

Power of the Purse members of the group have been working for months to build support within the community to successfully implement the Bring Girls on the Run program in the Huntington area. March is the official kick off of the program.

Power of the Purse is a women’s leadership group associated with United Way of the River Cities that creates a powerful, passionate network of women who strengthen the community through focused investment of their time, talent and resources. Bring Girls on the Run is a self-esteem building program targeted to third-to-fifth-grade girls. The program offers 12 weeks of classes and training to teach girls life skills, build self-confidence and prepare them physically to successfully complete a 5K.

Power of the Purse is beginning the chapter affiliate application process and fundraising for Bring Girls on the Run to Cabell-Wayne Counties. Once applications have been reviewed and accepted, the group will recruit coaches.

“Enthusiasm is building,” said Courtney Eastone, Power of the Purse chair. “The team gets larger every day. There is a lot of work to do and a lot of fundraising to take place to make this group a success, but we have a lot of great people on board who are very excited about the potential of this program.”

The steering committee is comprised of Power of the Purse members, Marshall Rec Center representatives, the HIT Center and the YMCA, employees of St. Mary’s Medical Center and Cabell Huntington Hospital, pediatricians, teachers, mothers, runners and other individuals.

The HIT Center of Huntington is also offering two classes and donating all proceeds collected during the month of March to the project. The first is a Boot Camp class on Tuesdays at 10 a.m., and the second is a Mommy and Me class at 2 p.m. on Sundays.

Brown Dog Yoga is offering a special Yoga class taught by Katrina Mailloux on March 30. Power of the Purse will host its annual brunch Hats On for the Derby on April 20, and the group is donating the proceeds to the project. A 5K and 10K walk/run will be April 28 at Barboursville Park to benefit Bring Girls on the Run to Cabell-Wayne Counties.
