Multimedia competition accepting applications until Friday
It’s the time of year again when Tri-State high school students dust off their cameras, load up various media programs onto their computers and hone their multimedia chops during good old-fashioned competition.
Ohio University Southern is accepting applications for the student EMPixx Awards until Friday.
The competition brings together students from Ohio, West Virginia and Kentucky who submit a myriad of multimedia projects.
Don Moore, director of electronic media, said the reason he created this competition is to give area high school students the opportunity to showcase their artistic ability while engaging with fellow students from different schools.
“Not only does this give them the chance to put a trophy in their school’s trophy case, it also gives them a forum to meet students with like interests,” Moore said. “It also gives us a chance to bring them to campus, which is always a plus. When they see your facility, your campus and see what your students are doing it is a good thing.”
Moore said he thinks a lot of people do not understand OUS is not simply an extended campus. He said a diploma given out at Southern says Ohio University and he holds his program to the same standard as if it were in Athens.
OUS freshman John Gulley, from Fleming County, Ky., said participating in the EMPixx awards while in high school helped pave the way for his making the decision to attend Southern.
“You come up here for a day, you see everything, talk to people and see what there is here,” Gulley said. “I remember the big person for me when I came was Howard Miller from ESPN, who was an OU Southern grad. I thought that was awesome. You see the name ESPN, you think wow, he went from here to there. That’s great.”
Gulley took home first place last year for his video commercial title, “P.U. Pooch-B-Gone.” Gulley said he had won awards in the past, but that was the first he won where he was the lead and that it was an emotional experience for him to hear his name called after going against hundreds of people.
The awards ceremony is set for Friday, March 15. Keynote speaker will be Brad Kalinoski, a Huntington, W.Va. native who works as compositing supervisor for LOOKFX in New York.
