Marshall coach Greg White said the Thundering Herd’s 91-90 victory at Toledo is a significant milestone for his program.

”This was a huge win,” White said. ”We found a way to win on the road. This is a tough place to play. Two years ago, we got beat here by more than 20 points.”

Marshall (12-2 overall, 4-2 Mid-American Conference) won it on a jump shot by Travis Young at the buzzer. A Toledo comeback fell just short after the Rockets (7-9. 1-4) trailed for nearly the whole game.

Marshall was ahead for most of the game Tuesday night and was ahead 83-72 with 5:55 to play. But Toledo went on an 18-6 run from there and took its first lead since the opening two minutes at 90-89 on a three-point play by Justin Hall with 12 seconds left.

The Rockets called a 20-second timeout at that point and again with one second left, giving Young just enough time for the winning shot.

”It’s the same old thing. We can’t make the play at the end,” a frustrated Toledo coach Stan Joplin said.

Tamar Slay and J.R. Van Hoose scored 23 points for Marshall. Toledo’s Robierre Cullars had 25.

Half of the Rockets’ 32 field goals were 3-pointers, with Moore making six and Cullars five. The 16 long-range baskets set a school and arena record at Toledo. ”They were unconscious on their 3-pointers tonight,” White said.

Elsewhere around the conference, Miami of Ohio took three overtimes to beat Ball State 86-84, Kent downed Eastern Michign 80-67, Western Michigan outscored Bowling Green 91-82 and Buffalo got by Central Michigan 71-58. Akron edged Ohio 62-60 in a game played Tuesday.

Refiloe Lethunya scored the winning basket with 1.4 seconds left to give Miami (6-6, 2-2) its victory over Ball State.

”That doesn’t happen to too many people in their lives,” Miami coach Charlie Coles said of Lethunya’s winning shot. ”He hung in there and did a great job.”

A shot by Shane Franks of Ball State from three-quarters court at the buzzer hit the top of the backboard.

The Cardinals (10-3, 2-2) lost their second straight three-overtime game. ”I was disappointed because we want to find a way to win the close ballgames,” coach Ray McCallum said of the back-to-back defeats.

The RedHawks’ Taylor led all scorers with 28 points. Ball State’s Josh Murray had 25.

Four players scored in double figures for Kent (11-2. 3-1) as the Golden Flashes handed Eastern Michigan (9-4, 3-1) its first conference defeat this season.

Nate Meers scored 13 to lead Kent. Eric Thomas had 12 points, and Kyrem Massey and John Whorton each scored 11. Corey Tarrant paced the Eagles with 18.

Kent took an early 14-4 lead on its way to doubling the score on Eastern Michigan at 32-16 with 7:26 left in the first half and never was seriously threatened the rest of the way.

Rod Brown scored 21 points and Bronson Nichols and Thadus Williams added 20 apiece as Western Michigan (5-8, 1-3) fought back from a 20-point early second-half deficit against Bowling Green (11-3, 3-1).

The Broncos fell behind 45-25 on Keith McLeod’s 3-pointer with 17:48 to play, but followed with a 30-12 run, putting them ahead for good 57-55 with 9:23 remaining.

The Broncos shot 74.1 percent from the floor in the second half and finished at 57.7 percent for the game.

Anthony Stacey led five Falcon players in double figures with 22 points.

Buffalo (3-11, 1-4) won its first conference game, beating Central Michigan (3-10, 0-4) with the help of Louis Campbell’s 18 points.

A 3-pointer by Kerry Hendrickson with 1:34 to go gave the Bulls a 10- point lead and put the game out of Central Michigan’s reach. Hendrickson finished with 13.

David Webber scored 21 points and Tim Kisner 20 for the Chippewas.
