Chesapeake – Fourth meant first for Chesapeake’s Doug Wiley. By placing fourth in the Division III district, Wiley earned his first-ever trip to the state wrestling tournament.
Wiley, 32-9 on the season, will go against Gary Wolfe of Oregon Cardinal Stritch Clay who is 29-8.
Chesapeake coach Phil Davis praised Wiley for his effort in the tournament.
"He did a great job. He had a great tournament," Chesapeake coach Phil Davis said. "The guy he lost to he had the potential to beat. There were some dominant wrestlers in the tournament."
The state tournament will be Thursday, Friday, and Saturday at the Schottenstein Center on the campus of Ohio State University.
"He really deserved it. He’s worked really hard," said Davis.
Wiley had a tough path to qualify.
Wiley beat Matt Browning of Crooksville 14-6 to open the district. He was pinned by Dusty Sanna of Granville in his second match.
"The guy was undefeated and he had him ready to pin and Doug ends up getting pinned," said Davis.
Wiley bounced back to pin David Keglemeiher of Columbus Academy. Next was a decisive decision over George Padgelek of Martins Ferry 11-3.
Wiley beat B. J. Springer of Licking Heights 9-2 to get him into fourth. He had to wrestle Sanna a second time and was pinned.
