Leroy Haas

Leroy E. Haas (Roy) passed away with loving family by his side on Thursday, Nov. 22, 2012. The Ironton native was born Oct 15,1931, to Leroy and Icele Haas. Roy graduated from Ironton High School in 1949 and joined the Air Force and then began his career in computer engineering. Roy retired from Control Data Corp in Minnesota and remained in Burnsville, Minn., for 41 yrs.

Roy is survived by his loving wife of 64 years, Marcella Golden Haas; his four children, M. Tracy (Steve) Blair of Ironton, Terry Haas, Farmington, Minn., Kimberly (Pat) Koss of Lakeville, Minn., and Dianne Brown of Burnsville, Minn.; five grandchildren; one great granddaughter; brother Ralph (Barbara) Haas of Portsmouth; sister Carol Bond of Dunedin Fla and many wonderful friends and family.

Services at Cremation Society of Minnesota will be on Thursday at 10 a.m. in Edina, Minn., and burial at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

Opal Slagle

Opal Lesta (Dean) Slagle, formerly of the Waterloo and Gallipolis communities, died on Monday, Nov. 26, 2012, at Arbors of Gallipolis. Opal was born to William Arlie and Metta Pearl (Miller) Dean on Feb. 18, 1922, in Wood County.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by three brothers, Lowell, Lyman and Harold Dean; one sister, Lois Harrison; one great-grandson, Brandon Coley; and one great-great-grandson, Daniel Lewis.

She was preceded in death by the father of her six children, Hobert Edsel Slagle. She was the loving, devoted mother to six children, Karen (Roger) Wilson of Columbus, Lois Ann Brown of Toldeo, Rosemary (Dana) Helmondollar of Chesapeake, Dennis (Donna) Slagle of Chesapeake, Janet (Denver) Hill of Gallipolis, and Betty Jo (Tom) Taylor of Chesapeake. She is also survived by one sister, Elsie Faye Applegate of Bourbonnais, Ill.; seven grandchildren, Vicki (Clyde) Caldwell of Croton, Christine (Clyde) Brown-Coley of Toledo, David Todd Reiter of Angola, Ind., Susan Brown of Bowling Green, Donald and Richard Brown of Toledo, and Jessica (John Paul) Kelley of Chesapeake; a special nephew, Merrill (Maxine) Harrison of Bulls Gap, Tenn.; a host of nieces, nephews, and extended family; and a special friend/classmate, Wayne Rucker of Ironton, who shared many hours with her while she resided at Morning Pointe Ridge in Russell, Ky.

Opal graduated from Waterloo High School in 1940, and delighted in talking about the Waterloo Wonders and attending the Waterloo School Reunions. She retired from the U.S. Postal Service as the Waterloo Postmaster in 1992. She was a member for many years at the Waterloo Methodist Church, until she moved to Gallipolis, where she became a member of the Good News Baptist Church. Opal loved teaching children about Christ and willingly served as a Sunday school and Vacation Bible School teacher. She was also a member of the Kitts Hill Homemaker’s Club.

Services will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Willis Funeral Home in Gallipolis, with the Rev. Bill Goodall, a close family friend, and Pastor Eric Fannin officiating. Family and friends may visit at the funeral home from 6 to 8 a.m. Wednesday and one hour prior to the service. Burial will be at the Gallia Baptist Cemetery in Gallia. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Holzer Hospice.

Deborah Jean

Deborah Jean, of Norton Shores, Mich., passed away peacefully Tuesday, Nov. 20, 2012, at home. She was born July 9, 1966, the daughter of Helen and Phillip Martin. In addition to her parents, she is survived by her husband, Sam Wieteki and his two sons, Don and Max.

Debbie was a graduate of Ironton High School and was a nurse at River Valley Health System in Ironton until it closed. In addition to her husband and parents, Debbie is survived by her sons, Michael Brent Preston II and Ethan Garrett Preston; one brother, Phillip H. Martin of Ironton, her maternal grandmother, Eloise Martin of Fla. and several very much loved cousins, aunts, and uncles. Funeral services will be 1 p.m. Wednesday at Phillips Funeral Home with Father David Huffman officiating. Burial will follow in Woodland Cemetery and visitation will be today from 6 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home. Jack Wilson

Jack Harold Wilson, 76, of Proctorville, died Saturday, Nov. 24, 2012, at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, Huntington, W.Va. A graveside service will be conducted 2 p.m. Thursday at Woodmere Memorial Park, Huntington, W.Va. by Pastor Jeff Black.  American Legion Post 93, Kenova, W.Va. will conduct military graveside rites.  Visitation will be held 6. to 8 p.m. today at Hall Funeral Home. Sandra Daniels

Sandra Lou Townsend Daniels, 71, of Sevierville, Tenn., formerly of Ironton, went home to be with the Lord Nov. 23, 2012 at her residence. The Cabell County, W.Va. native was born Feb. 17, 1941, the daughter of the late Bruce Wellman and Anna Roberts Steinbrecher.

Sandra was a graduate of Dawson-Bryant High School and worked as a ward clerk for Lawrence County General Hospital for many years. She was a member of Sugar Creek Missionary Baptist Church and attended Grace Baptist Church in Sevierville. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Jerry Lee Lavender of Kitts Hill, her special grandmother, Nancy Roberts and her special aunt, Sadie Roberts. Sandra is survived by her husband, Henry Franklin Daniels whom she married Aug. 31, 1996; son, Larry Mickalls of Ironton; son and daughter-in-law, Donald and Elizabeth Townsend of South Shore, Ky.; sister and brother-in-law, Rosemary and Eddie Mays of Kitts Hill; and many grandchildren, great grandchildren, special nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be 3:30 p.m. Wednesday in Mamre Cemetery with Rev. Jerry Lavender officiating. There will be no public visitation. Phillips Funeral Home is handling the arrangements. Thomas Tredway

Thomas Roland Tredway, 86, of Scottown, died Sunday, Nov. 25, 2012, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. He was the husband of Patty Lou Tredway, who survives. Funeral will be at 11 a.m. Thursday at Hall Funeral Home. Burial will be in Rome Cemetery. Visitation is 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday. Mary Lou Mackebee

Mary Lou Mackebee, 82, of Ashland, Ky., died Saturday. Nov. 24, 2012, in Community Hospice Care Center. Funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Steen Funeral Home, 13th St. Chapel, with Pastor Kenneth Vaughn officiating and Community Hospice Chaplain Randy Tate assisting. Burial will be in Bellefonte Memorial Gardens in Flatwoods, Ky., Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home or one hour prior to service time.
