Fairland 6, Chesapeake 5

PROCTORVILLE – This time the close shave didn’t nick the Fairland Lady Dragons.

After losing a series of close games last season, Fairland got a measure of revenge Monday with a 6-5 win over the Chesapeake Lady Panthers in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

"This is a very big win. We needed this one. A win like this puts pressure on the other teams and takes a little off us. We lost some close ones last year, so it was nice to win a close one this time," Fairland coach Jim Bailey said.

Fairland is 5-1 and 2-0 in the league. Chesapeake is 1-1 in the OVC.

JoAnn Harmon ran her record to 5-0 as she pitched a four-hitter, striking out 10 and walking only two. Kim Frye took the loss with a five-hitter. She fanned seven and walked two.

Chesapeake went in front 2-0 in the top of the first.

Emily Delimpo and Frye singled, and, on the throw to third, Frye went to second. A passed ball scored Delimpo with Frye going to third where she scored as Kristen Huff reached on an error.

Fairland came back with five in the bottom of the first.

Jennifer Jones had a bunt single, Brooke Fisher and Maggie Staggs were hit by pitches, and Jeana Diamond hit into a fielder’s choice with Jones beating the throw home.

Harmon was on through an error as Fisher scored, and Paula Daniel was safe on an error as two more runs scored. Holly Black then squeezed home the final run.

The Lady Dragons got what proved to be the winning run in the second.

Fisher walked, stole second, Diamond reached on an error, and Harmon had an RBI single.

The Lady Panthers rallied with three runs in the sixth.

Delimpo singled, Frye walked, Jessica Hall hit into a fielder’s choice, and Huff doubled home a pair. Shelli White then put down a sacrifice bunt for the run.

On Tuesday, Fairland hosts Huntington St. Joe while Chesapeake entertains Spring Valley.
