COAL GROVE – The Chesapeake Panthers just keep rolling along.

The Panthers won yet another meet as they easily claimed the Giovanni’s Pizza Invitational Friday.

Chesapeake had 159 points while host Coal Grove was runner-up with 110.5 points. South Point was third with 87.5, Fairland had 67, Spring Valley 55, Rock Hill 8, and Coal Grove B-team 4.

"It turned out to be a good meet for us," Hornets coach Nick Miller said. "Chesapeake is awful strong. (Danny) Wassell had a great meet, but I was pleased with the effort of our kids. (Jeff) Hamilton did a nice job for us."

Wassell won the high jump with a leap of 6-feet-2 and took first in the 400 meter dash with a 52.9 time. Wassell also ran the 200 meter dash for the first time and won that event at 23.6 seconds. He was filling in for Robby Isaacs who pulled a muscle in the long jump preliminaries.

Hamilton won the long jump with a personal-best leap of 20-7 1/4. He also took the pole vault as he cleared 13-feet and he ran a leg on the 400 and 1600 relay teams that finished second.

South Point’s Jarred Smith remained unbeaten in the shot put and discus with throws of 48-4 and 150-4 1/2, respectively. Fairland’s Jack Girgis was a double winner as he won the 110 hurdles (42.9 seconds) and the 300 hurdles (16.3).

Chesapeake’s other individual first place finish went to Ryan Slone who beat teammate Brad Fulton in the 800 meter run with a 2:09.3 clocking.

Coal Grove did celebrate a championship in the girls meet by edging Chesapeake by one point, 107-106. Fairland and Spring Valley tied for third with 74, Rock Hill had 72, and South Point 42.

The Lady Hornets won three relay events and Michelle Christian was first in the 800 run with a 2:37 time to lead the way.

Rock Hill, missing some players due to the school prom, was led by sophomore Jessica Kerns who took meet high point honors by winning four events.

Kerns claimed the high jump (5-0), the long jump (14-11), the 300 hurdles (53.1 seconds), and the 100 hurdles (16.5).

Fairland’s Chelsea Walls won the 1600 run (6:15.3) and the 3200 (13:35.4) while placing second in the 800.

Rock Hill’s Rachel Hartwig won two events, running a 1:04.2 in the 400 and 29.5 in the 200. South Point’s Deidra Layne wont the 100 at 13.3 seconds with teammate Angela Linthicum second at 13.8.
