Sciotoville – Pitching, offense, and defense are the three main elements of baseball. The Green Bobcats faltered in one area and it proved costly. The Bobcats had six errors as they lost 10-9 to the Portsmouth East Tartans Monday in eight innings.

"Defensively we had a big letdown and that costs us the game," Green coach Dave Shoupe said.

The loss proved critical in the Bobcats Southern Ohio Conference chase. Green is 9-3 overall and 4-2 in the SOC.

Chris Williams doubled and Rick Perkins singled to put Green up 1-0 in the first, and two more scored in the third.

Brad Bainer reached on an error and scored on a hit by Williams. After Williams stole second, Perkins had another RBI single.

East got a run in the bottom of the inning, then put eight runs on the board in the fourth.

"We muffed a double play ball for an error that should have ended the inning, then they got a base hit and just took off from there," Shoupe said.

The Bobcats came back with three runs in each the fifth and sixth innings.

In the fifth, Jeff Dixon doubled, Perkins walked, Kyle Dyer singled, and Matt Riffe, Justin Voiers, and Tim Willis all walked to force in three runs.

In the sixth, Williams got a base hit, Perkins walked, Riffe was safe on an error, Voiers had a two-run single, and Willis capped the rally with an RBI single.

"We made some errors, but I’ll give this team credit. We fought back to take the game into extra innings," said Shoupe.

East won the game in the eighth by using a leadoff error, a double by Handley, an intentional walk, and a base hit by Yates to score the winning run.

"East has come a long way. They’re got a bunch of scrappy kids," said Shoupe.

Green hosts New Boston in a conference game Tuesday.
