Snapping a four-game losing streak, the Hornets beat the St. Joe Flyers 12-2 in five innings Tuesday.

"We needed to get back on the good side. We’ve been on the bad side since the first time we played St. Joe. Maybe this will get us going again," Hornets coach John Jones said.

Coal Grove got going with 10 hits including a pair of home runs. Dean Mader was 3-for-4 with a home run and four runs batted in. Josh Collins was 2-4 with a homer and three RBI, Tim McClean 2-2, and Jarred Keaton 2-4 and two RBI.

The offensive attack backed the two-hit pitching of sophomore Eric Tackett who struck out five and walked four.

Coal Grove jumped on the Flyers for four runs in the first inning.

With one out, McClean and Keaton doubled for a run, Mader singled, Josh Fields reached on an error as Keaton scored, Ryan Young singled home Mader, and David Webb was safe on a fielder’s choice as Fields scored.

A run scored in the second when Ryan Brown was hit by a pitch, stole second, took third on a fly ball, and came home as Keaton reached on an error.

The lead went to 6-0 in the fourth. Collins singled, stole second, went to third on a fly ball, and came home on Mader’s two-out base hit.

Danny Stack singled and Pat McGinnis hit a two-run homer in the top of the fifth to get St. Joe within 6-2, but the Hornets came back with six in the bottom of the inning to get the mercy rule.

Webb reached on an error, Brown walked, and Collins belted a three-run homer.

McClean and Keaton followed with singles and Mader hit a three-run homer to end the game.

Coal Grove, 5-4, plays at South Point Wednesday in a key Ohio Valley Conference game.

St. Joe is now 3-5.
