WHEELERSBURG – The Wheelersburg Pirates were unbeaten and ranked No. 1 in the baseball coaches poll. After a doubleheader with the South Point Pointers Saturday, only one of those facts may still be true.

Wheelersburg might remain No. 1, but the Pirates are no longer unbeaten as they lost 13-12 to the South Point Pointers.

The Pirates won the opener 15-5 in five innings.

The game was in doubt until the final out as Wheelersburg scored six times in the bottom of the seventh to get within a run.

But reliever Jared Waggoner came on to get three outs – two on strikeouts – and preserve the win.

The Pointers had scored four times in the top of the seventh to take a 13-6 lead.

Jarred Perdue and Justin Eaches singled, and Shane Fuller walked to load the bases. Brian Cremeans reached on an error as a run scored, and Waggoner had his second two-run single of the game. An out later, Jamie Douglas singled home the final run.

Wheelersburg tried to rally in the bottom of the inning.

A walk, a bloop single, and a three-run homer by Adam Conn cut the deficit to 13-9.

Two walks and a hit batsman loaded the bases. Waggoner came on and got one out, but Josh Newman singled home two runs. After Waggoner struck out the next batter, Dan Sutton got a fly ball single to score a run and make it 13-12.

Sutton stole second to put two runners in scoring position, but Waggoner struck out the next batter to end the game.

South Point took a 2-0 lead in the first when Fuller walked and B. J. Belville hit a two-out, two-run homer.

The Pointers came back with five runs in the second.

Shane Holsinger led off with a home run, Josh Morrison then singled off the bottom of the fence, Perdue singled, a passed ball moved the runners up, and Cremeans reached on an error as a run scored.

Waggoner had a two-run single , then stole second and scored on a hit by Belville.

After Wheelersburg got two runs in the bottom of the second, the Pointers got a run back in the third.

Perdue walked with one out, moved up on a ground out, and came home when Fuller singled.

The Pirates got three runs in the fifth to make it 8-5, and then both teams got a run in the sixth.

Waggoner slammed a solo home run leading off the top of the sixth and the Pirates scored in the bottom of the inning to make it 9-6.

Morrison got the win in relief while Waggoner recorded the save.

In the first game, Wheelersburg collected 16 hits en route to the easy win. Michael Perkins was 2-3 with a home run, Chad Newsom went 3-4, and Dustin Woodrum and Lance Davis were 2-3.

Douglas was 2-3 with a home run for the Pointers while Holsinger and Belville each went 2-3.

South Point, 12-5, plays at Chesapeake Monday in an OVC game.

Wheelersburg is now 16-1.

Bengals ink Langford

CINCINNATI (AP) – Defensive end Jevon Langford agreed to a two-year contract Saturday with the Cincinnati Bengals, his team for the past four seasons.

Langford, 26, was an unrestricted free agent after last season, when he started seven games and had 25 tackles.

The Bengals also released undrafted free agent linebacker Tarrell Knauls, who failed his physical Saturday.

Cornerback Ty Howard fell while running his 40-yard dash Saturday, resulting in a strained left hamstring and bruised right thigh.
