William J. Martin, president of CME International Inc., will speak at the Greater Lawrence County Area Chamber of Commerce’s monthly membership luncheon at noon Friday at the Grandview Inn.

CME is currently conducting a feasibility study on a 278-acre site in Hamilton Township where it plans to build a merchant power plant.

If constructed, the proposed natural gas fired plant would resell electricity. The company expects to complete preliminary engineering plans within several weeks. Permits are expected in one year, with commercial operation slated to begin by 2004.

At the meeting, Martin will speak about the power plant project.

He will also speak about globalization, technology and deregulation, three of the most powerful things in today’s economy, said Pat Clonch, chamber executive director.

"Mr. Martin constantly travels around the world and is involved in all three," Mrs. Clonch said, adding his insight will prove valuable to chamber members.

"He has some good insights into today’s economy," she said.

Martin will likely discuss the local economic impact of the merchant power plant.

Company officials have already said construction would employ 200 to 300 people over two years. It would mean millions of dollars in purchases from area businesses and bring in tax dollars to local schools and government agencies.

Company officials also estimate the plant would maintain about 30 full-time operations employees once construction is complete.
