Football season is over for the Dawson-Bryant High School Hornets. A lot of hard work went into the season , but no playoff possibilities for this year’s crew.

And that could have been the end of the story.

But when Coach Nick Miller heard about the great need for food at the Ironton City Welfare Mission, he got an idea.

Perhaps his squad might want to do one more good deed as a team before they hung up their cleats for the year.

And they did.

At presstime, the exact numbers were not in, but the team did head out and did collect from its fans, families and neighbors.

How much they collected does not really matter, although the haul was significant. What really counts is that Coach Miller did not have to ask twice. These young men were more than willing to put on their civilian clothes and to head out on the streets to do something for someone else.

Their project might not have been countywide, and their collection might not have brought in thousands of dollars, but it was just the kind of little step that gets a movement started.

There are many Lawrence County residents who belong to groups that could easily sponsor such a project – even if it were on a smaller scale.

And that is how this county can make sure no family goes hungry this holiday season.

Generosity is contagious. The Hornets should be proud; this is one bit of effort that could turn into an avalanche.
