When you mention Chesapeake in state basketball circles, a winning tradition immediately comes to mind.

For the seventh time in school history – the sixth time under current coach Norm Persin – the Panthers have advanced to the regional tournament by beating Waverly 77-59 Friday night. Five of those teams made it to the regional finals, one game away from the state tournament.

The team has also won five of the last six sectional championships and six straight Ohio Valley Conference titles.

Coach Persin can be credited for much of the success Chesapeake is enjoying. Just this year, Persin reached a significant milestone in his coaching career, picking up his 400th victory. His record as a coach – which includes six seasons at Oak Hill, two at Wilmington and 16 at Chesapeake – is 411-122. His record at Chesapeake is 277-58. This translates to an average of 17 wins per season.

This year, the Panthers have enjoyed yet another stellar season, with an overall record of 23-1. In the final Associated Press state poll, Chesapeake was ranked fifth in Division III.

With its success in recent years, Chesapeake has become one of the most dominate basketball schools in Southeastern Ohio. We extend our congratulations to the team for yet another outstanding season.
