Ruth Howard
Ruth Hazel King Howard, 78, of Ironton passed away Saturday, Sept. 8, 2012, at the Community Hospice Care Center in Ashland, Ky. The Portsmouth native was born Nov. 21, 1933, the daughter of the late Ralph and Agnes Farmer King.
Ruth was a 1951 graduate of St. Joseph High School. She retired in 2004 after 50 years as a secretary/bookkeeper for the A.F. Industries. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ironton and enjoyed bingo.
She is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Jimmer and Dee Ann Howard of Kitts Hill; two brothers, Daniel King and Ralph King both of Columbus; four sisters and a brother-in-law, Martha King, Sharon Brooks, Carol and Wayne Harmon, all of Ironton, and Mary Tomlinson of Melbourne, Fla.; two grandsons: Zach and Alisha Howard of Kitts Hill and Nich Howard of Deering and two great-grandchildren, Cameron and Meredith Howard.
Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday in Calvary Cemetery with Father David Huffman officiating. There will be no public visitation. Alvin West
Alvin Eugene West, 75 of Columbus, died Thursday, Sept. 13, 2012, after a brief battle with cancer.
He was born March 21, 1937 in Pedro to the late Squire and Mary (Carner) West. He was a loving father and grandfather and a very active member of Maize Road Baptist Church. He retired in 2008 after 25 years with Mt. Carmel St. Ann’s Hospital. He was preceded in death by his wife, Patricia and is survived by four children, Chuck (Liz) West, Nina Close, Rachel Duvall and Esther (Chad) Thompson; eight grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Family will receive friends Monday from 4 to 8 p.m. at Schoedinger North Chapel, 5554 Karl Road where a funeral service will be Tuesday at 11:30 a.m. Interment will follow in Riverside Cemetery. Delbert Long Sr.
Delbert A. “Deb” Long, Sr., 84 of South Point, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 12, 2012 at the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House in Huntington, W.Va. The Ironton native was born Feb. 12, 1928, the son of the late Herbert and Magdaline Thomas Long. He is survived by his companion of 30 years, Beatrice “Bea” McSorley
Mr. Long attended Pedro schools and was a former maintenance man for Carlyle Tile and Coyne Textile.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by four brothers, Ralph Long, Carl Long, Paul Long and his twin brother, Gilbert Long; and two sisters, Juanita “Sissy” Long and Mae Long.
In addition to his companion of 30 years, he is survived by son, Delbert Long, Jr. of Guerneville, Calif.; daughter and son-in-law, Carla and John Musgrave of South Point; daughter and son-in-law, Teresa and Lawrence Rogers of Ironton; and son and daughter-in-law,Terry and Tracey Long of Kitts Hill. He is also survived by his extended family, son and daughter-in-law, Bennie and Sandy McSorley of West Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Fred and Martha McSorley of West Virginia; son and daughter-in-law, Gary and Mary McSorely of West Virginia; daughter, Valarie Eplion of West Virginia; daughter and son-in-law, Jean and Thurman Bartram of West Virginia; 11 grandchildren: Robert Allen Jr., Dara Rose Long, Marty Ramsey, Shawn Ramsey, Jamie Ramsey, Keith Russell, Sherry Wright, Christy Wellman, Melissa Wentz, Kelli Meehling, and Shelli Webb; one great grandchild, Paige Delaney Allen; mother of his children, Christine Long Fannin; and a very special fur buddy, Chigger.
Graveside services will be 11 a.m. Monday in Woodland Cemetery with Rev. Mike Long and Rev. Leon Dalton officiating. There will be no public visitation. The procession will form at Phillips Funeral Home at 10:30 a.m. and will depart for the cemetery at 10:45 a.m. Donations may be made to the Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House, 3100 Staunton Road, Huntington, West Virginia 25702. Paul Johnson
Paul Edward Johnson, 84, of Huntington, W.Va., died Friday Sept. 14, 2012, at St. Mary’s Medical Center. A graveside service was Saturday at Centenary Cemetery in Chesapeake, Ohio, by Minister Tom Miller. Burial followed. Hall Funeral Home in Proctorville, was in charge of arrangements. Sgt. Thomas Cain
Sgt. Thomas R. Cain, USMC, 54, of South Point, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, in Emogene Dolin Jones Hospice House of Huntington. Funeral service will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home with Dr. Scott Mann officiating. Burial will follow with military honors in Highland Memorial Gardens, South Point. Visitation will be 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Schneider-Griffin Funeral Home.

Hazel White, 98, of Ironton, died Friday, Sept. 14, 2012, at a local health care center. Arrangements are pending at Phillips Funeral Home.
