Dawson-Bryant is the only school in the state to implement the Ohio Boating Education Course into its safety curriculum and for the program, the school received an award from the National Water Safety Congress.

The annual award, according to information from the agency, is given to groups that "have made a significant contribution or an outstanding effort to enhance or promote water safety at the community or state level."

The award was presented to the course instructor Joe Rowe Friday morning by Ohio Department of Natural Resources Watercraft Specialist Dean Palmer. The program fulfills the boater education requirements set by Ohio for children born after January 1, 1982. The law requires anyone born after this date must complete a boater education course in order to operate a powerboat that has an engine greater than 10 horsepower.

The program at Dawson-Bryant has been offered at the school for 5 years.
