Rebounding was St. Joe Flyers coach Adam Simpson’s biggest fear.
Joe Laber and Chris Laber helped calm their coach’s deepest fears.
With Joe Laber getting 10 rebounds and Chris Laber nine, the Flyers edged the Symmes Valley Vikings 71-69 Friday.
St. Joe had 38 rebounds and just 10 turnovers. The Vikings had 36 rebounds and 16 turnovers.
"Joe and Chris did a great job on the boards," Simpson said. "We knew we had to rebound with them. They outrebounded New Boston 53-to-21 last week, so rebounding was our number one priority."
Bill Dressel had a game-high 29 points, grabbed seven rebounds, and had three steals to lead the Flyers, 4-10.
Joe Laber had 17 points and Danny Stack added 10 points and five assists. Chris Carte had six assists.
"I can sum up our night with 18-for-69 (shooting from the field). We couldn’t buy a basket," Vikings coach Alvin Carpenter said.
Terry Elswick had a big game for the Vikings with 27 points and Drew Hunt scored 12 points. Brandon Runyon and Kevin Miller had seven rebounds each.
"They’ve got a nice team and they’re playing well, so this was a nice win for us," Simpson said. "We got beat by 24 our last game, but these guys don’t get down. They responded tonight. And Bill had a big game as usual."
Dressel scored 11 points the first quarter as St. Joe jumped in front 21-10.
"That meant a lot to us. It got us going and gave us some confidence going," said Simpson.
Elswick had seven points the second quarter as the Vikings got within 36-27 at the half. Stack scored six for the Flyers.
The Vikings tried to rally the in the third quarter but fell behind doe to Joe Laber had six points the third quarter St. Joe lead at 51-42.
Elswick scored 12 points and Hunt six as the Vikings staged a comeback the fourth quarter. But Dressel had nine points and the Flyers got some key contributions off the bench after three players fouled out around the five minute mark.
"Chris Keeney just did an excellent job and Hornbeck hit a big free throw and played well. For those two to step in and play well was a big boost for us," said Simpson. "And I thought Kyle Johnson and Shawn Hacker did a good job off the bench."
