Ironton High School football player Tanner Schweickart has driven past the local churches and seen the lines of people waiting to get their box or bag of groceries from the food pantries.

When he learned recently that some of these organizations were running low on items to offer, he came up with a fast solution. Next week the Ironton High School football players and cheerleaders will fan out across the city and make door-to-door requests for non-perishable food items. Those items will then be divided among the city’s food pantries.

“We’re doing this to help the community that supports us on Friday nights,” Schweickart said. “We can’t just let people go hungry.”

The young people will make their appeal to homes on Fourth and Fifth streets and in West Ironton Tuesday between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

“The football players may stay out longer,” Schweickart said. “But the cheerleaders have practice.”

On Wednesday between the hours of 10:30 a.m. and 4 p.m. donations will be sought on Sixth, Seventh and Eighth streets; on Thursday they will go door-to-door on Ninth Street and will ask for donations at area businesses.

Boxes will also be set up at the office of Dr. James Schweickart and Dr. Nick Medinger at Fourth and Center streets.
