Whaley#039;s state championship leads Ironton weightlifters

Tyler Whaley went to the state meet and made a quite a statement.
Whaley, a senior at Ironton High School, racked up two state meet records as he won the 250-pound division.
Whaley had a record 1,465 total pounds that included a state record 390-pound bench press. He also had a 550 squat and 525 deadlift.
"My goal was to win a state championship. I knew the competition would be tough, but I was determined that second place wasn't an option," Whaley said.
Senior Bryan Hopper finished fourth in the 145-pound division with a 945-pound total. He threw up a bench press of 255, a 315 squat and 375 deadlift.
Placing sixth was junior Jeremy Akers in the unlimited weight class. Akers had a 315 bench, 500 squat and 485 deadlift for a 1,300 total.
Finishing 15th in the 225 division was junior Robin Fout with 1,075 pounds. He had a 255 bench press, 400 squat and 420 deadlift.
Sophomore Greg Igo was 22nd in the unlimited class with 955 pounds. He posted numbers that included a 275 bench, 330 squat and 350 deadlift.
Freshman Cole Friend was 21st in the 250-pound class. He had a 235 bench, 280 squat and 350 deadlift for an 865 total.
