OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - One year after surviving a scare against 16th-seeded Holy Cross, Kansas held on to beat No. 15 seed Utah State 64-61.

The second-seeded Jayhawks (26-7) questioned their seeding after winning the Big 12 regular-season title, but got more than just a tuneup from Utah State (24-9).

They found a way to win, though - Utah State missed two 3-point tries in the final 10 seconds - and will play 10th-seeded Arizona State in the second round Saturday.

Keith Langford scored 22 points and Nick Collison had 18 for the Jayhawks. Desmond Penigar had 25 points for Utah State.

Notre Dame 70,

UW-Milwaukee 69

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - A day after shaving the heads of his Fighting Irish teammates as a show of team unity, Chris Thomas scored 27 points in his hometown to lead them past Wisconsin-Milwaukee.

The 12th-seeded Panthers had a great chance to pull off the upset, but Dylan Page missed a layup just before the buzzer after getting a terrific pass from Clay Tucker.

Torin Francis, who had 23 points and 14 rebounds, scored the winning points on a putback with 32.8 seconds left after grabbing a loose ball in the lane.

The fifth-seeded Irish (23-9) are in the second round for the third straight year, though they haven't advanced to the round of the 16 during that stretch. They'll play Illinois on Saturday.

The Panthers (24-8), making their first appearance in the NCAA tournament in their 107-year history, got 18 points from Tucker and Ronnie Jones.

Duke 67, Colorado St. 57

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Freshman Shelden Williams scored on an offensive rebound with 1:21 to play, then sank two free throws with 44.2 seconds left and the third-seeded Blue Devils barely got past Colorado State.

Duke scored the last eight points after the 14th-seeded Rams (19-14), the sixth-place team in the Mountain West Conference during the regular season, cut the lead to 59-57 on Brian Greene's 16-footer with 2:59 to play.

After Williams' four big points, J.J Reddick, who scored 16, made four consecutive free throws in the final 26 seconds to send Duke (25-6) into a second-round matchup against 11th-seeded Central Michigan.

Matt Nelson, Colorado State's 7-foot sophomore center, scored 21 points. Dahntay Jones had 23 for Duke.

Midwest

Tulsa 84, Dayton 71

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Jason Parker, Kevin Johnson and Dante Swanson shot the Dayton Flyers right out of the NCAA tournament.

Parker scored 24 points on 10-of-13 shooting, Swanson was 8-of-15 for 24 points and Johnson added 16 points on a 7-of-10 effort as 13th-seeded Tulsa surprised No. 4 Dayton.

The Golden Hurricane (23-9), who have won eight straight games, will play Wisconsin (23-7) in the second round Saturday.

Ramod Marshall scored 21 points for Dayton (24-6), which earned the No. 4 seed after winning the Atlantic 10 tournament on its homecourt.

Central Michigan 79, Creighton 73

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Mike Manciel scored a season-high 29 points as 11th-seeded Central Michigan pulled off a mild upset of Creighton despite nearly blowing a 26-point lead.

The Chippewas (25-6) allowed the lead to dwindle to two before sealing the victory by shooting 5-of-6 from the free-throw line down the stretch.

It was the Chippewas' second first-round win in four NCAA trips. They hadn't been in the NCAA field since 1987.

It marks the fourth time in five years that a Mid-American Conference team has reached the second round of the tournament.

Kyle Korver scored 21 points in his final college game for Creighton (29-5), knocked out in the first round after drawing its highest seed in 14 NCAA appearances.

Arizona State 84, Memphis 71

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) - Ike Diogu scored 22 points, including 10 in a key second-half run, as Arizona State won in its first NCAA tournament appearance since 1995.

Diogu did it all against seventh-seeded Memphis, shooting 9-of-11 from the floor with a variety of post moves and even stepped out to hit a pair of 3-pointers in a 13-0 second-half run that opened up a 10-point lead for the 10th-seeded Sun Devils (20-11).

His two-handed dunk with 2:41 left made it 70-59, squelching any late rally. Chris Massie scored 20 points and had 13 rebounds for seventh-seeded Memphis (23-7).

Illinois 65,

Western Kentucky 60

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) - James Augustine, Deron Williams and Dee Brown combined for 37 points, 16 rebounds and 13 assists, and Brown hit two free throws with 22.8 seconds left to seal the win for Illinois.

Big Ten player of the year Brian Cook, a senior, had his typical game with 17 points and 10 rebounds.

No. 4 seed Illinois (25-6) was the third higher-seeded team in Indianapolis to struggle Thursday, but like Marquette and Missouri in the Midwest Regional, the Illini escaped narrowly at the end.

No. 13 seed Western Kentucky (24-9) led 43-41 with 12:27 to go, but Cook tied the score with a dunk and Williams gave Illinois the lead with a 3-pointer. The Hilltoppers tied the score three times after that, but the Illini never trailed again. Nate Williams led Western Kentucky with 17 points.

Wisconsin 81,

Weber State 74

SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) - Kirk Penney scored 21 points to lead fifth-seeded Wisconsin over No. 12 Weber State.

Wisconsin's stifling defense gets most of the credit for the team's success this season, and the Badgers held the Wildcats (26-6) in check until the final minutes.

But it was sharp shooting that got the regular-season champions of the Big Ten out to a quick start. The Badgers shot 57 percent to take a 15-point halftime lead and finished at 53 percent.

Mike Wilkinson added 15 points and Devin Harris 14 for Wisconsin (23-7), which set a school record for wins.

Slobodan Ocokoljic, a transfer from Ohio State, led Weber State with 26 points and 14 rebounds. Jermaine Boyette added 25 points for the Wildcats, who had a 17-game winning streak snapped.
