CHESHIRE - Jessica Mann was her same old self, and new catcher Kate Nida played like a veteran.

Mann fired a one-hitter and Nida teamed with Mann to make a game-saving play as the Fairland Lady Dragons nipped the River Valley Lady Raiders 2-1 Thursday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.

Fairland went into the bottom of the seventh inning with a 2-0 lead. Mann struck out the first two batters, but an error allowed Adkins to reach base.

Russell doubled home Adkins and then stole third. However, a pitch got through to the backstop and Nida chased the ball down as Russell tried to score. Nida threw to Mann covering home and the pitcher put the tag on the runner for the final out.

"This is the first time we've had Kate behind the plate, so that was a pretty good play by her and Mann came through and blocked the plate well," Fairland coach Leroy Baise said.

Fairland got its two runs in the fourth inning.

Kristen Clausing singled, Kristen Berry reached on an error, and Mandy Clark put down a sacrifice bunt. Kristen Brumfield bunted for a hit and on a throw to third, the ball sailed down the foul line allowing both runners to score.

"River Valley always play us tough," Baise said. "But Mann threw well and we made some big plays."

Fairland, 3-2 and 1-0 in the OVC, hosts Coal Grove Monday in a league game.
