COAL GROVE — Two brothers from Coal Grove are breathing new life into the former Rocky Top Raceway.

The dirt track off County Road 6 hasn’t seen any action in a while, but Cody Gool and his brother Clint Meadows have been working since May to resurrect the property.

“Everything was worn down and grown up,” Gool said. “It’s been two years since anything was done there.”

The circular dirt track was used for racing cars, but Goal and Meadows have transformed the site into a motocross track, Rock Camp Motocross.

Gool said it was the property owner, Blaine Evans, who presented the brothers with an opportunity to open their own track.

“My brother have raced since we were little,” Gool said. “… The track was perfect for what we wanted.”

Instead of a flat, circular racing track, the brothers worked to excavate the land and build jumps for the motocross bikes. Gool said competitions and practice sessions will be available on weekends for interested riders.

The grand opening for Rock Camp Motocross will be Friday.

Anyone interested in practicing on the course can come to the track beginning at 4 p.m. and fill out an admission slip. Cost to practice on the course is $20.

There will also be live music and the practice is open for the public to watch with the price of admission. Food and drink concessions will also be available.

On Saturday, Rock Camp Motocross will have its first races.

The gates open at 3 p.m., signups for racers begin at 4 p.m., practice starts at 5 p.m. and the races begin at 6 p.m.

Gool said there will be two races, or motos, for each division. Divisions will range from beginners to experienced riders and young racers to adult. There will also be trophies and cash prizes for the money class races.

Gool said he hopes all the hard work on the track will pay off and the new business will be a success.

“I’m pretty excited,” he said. “I hope it goes well.”
