Many of us are anxious about the 135th edition of the Ironton-Lawrence County Memorial Day Parade.

We do not have to wait until Monday, however, to kick off the holiday weekend.

Starting tonight, the Ironton Catholic Schools will host its 17th annual Charity Fair. It serves as the largest fund-raiser of the year for St. Joseph High School and St. Lawrence Elementary. Since the schools are self-supported and not funded by the state, the money raised helps offset tuition for students. The money is also used for operating costs at the schools.

On Friday night, the Knights of Columbus will sponsor Monte Carlo Night at the Knights of Columbus Hall on South Third Street. The event, open to the public, will feature the oldies sounds of the local band, The Fugitives.

For the entertainment seekers, Saturday and Sunday will offer some good music as well. On Saturday, Bluegrass band Boss Tweed will perform and local country artist Lee McCormack will be the featured entertainment on Sunday.

As always, the fair will include the food, crafts, games and much more, and the thousands who will turn out for Monday's parade will be able to grab a bite to eat before the big show.

Each and every year, the Charity Fair proves successful because it appeals to everyone. It offers plenty to do for the children and entertainment for people of all ages. Even if you just go for the fellowship, chances are you will not be disappointed.

Like any event of this magnitude, it takes a lot of dedication from parents, volunteers, and community members to make it a success. We salute these individuals for taking the time to bring a good, wholesome, family oriented festival to the people of Ironton and Lawrence County.
