Cano selects AL’s

home run derby trio

NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees second baseman Robinson Cano has asked Jose Bautista, Prince Fielder and Mark Trumbo to join him on the AL side for the All-Star home run derby.

Cano announced the invitations Monday, a day after rosters were announced for the All-Star game July 10 in Kansas City.

Dodgers outfielder Matt Kemp said Sunday he invited Carlos Beltran, Carlos Gonzalez and Giancarlo Stanton to join him on the NL side. Kemp is on the disabled list because of a strained left hamstring.

 

Ex-NFL player gets

probation for lying

SANTA ANA, Calif. (AP) — Federal authorities say former NFL player Johnnie Morton Jr. has been sentenced to two years probation for lying to a grand jury during a criminal probe of his California business associate.

The Internal Revenue Service said Monday the 40-year-old conceded he lied during 2009 testimony by saying he did not have business dealings with Neang Chhorvann.

The agency says the ex-Kansas City Chiefs and San Francisco 49ers player later acknowledged he had given Chhorvann more than $2 million to be invested.

Chhorvann pleaded guilty to one count of money laundering in 2011. He failed to appear for sentencing. The agency says a warrant was issued for his arrest.

Defense attorney Fred Heather says Morton’s money was stolen and Chhorvann threatened to kill Morton’s parents if Morton testified against him.

 

Former fraud victim

enters guilty plea

COLUMBUS (AP) — A woman defrauded by an ex-Ohio State and Indianapolis Colts quarterback in a million-dollar sports ticket fraud has pleaded guilty to her own involvement in the scheme.

Franklin County prosecutor Ron O’Brien says Anita Barney started out as a victim and then became an offender.

Barney pleaded guilty to two felony theft charges Monday. She’s been sentenced to three years of community control and 100 hours of community service and ordered to pay $427,000 to 19 victims.

Authorities say the 70-year-old Barney loaned money to former football great Art Schlichter (SHLEES’-tuhr), then recruited friends to participate in the scheme.

Schlichter is serving a nearly 11-year sentence for taking thousands of dollars from his victims for college and NFL game tickets he never delivered. He has apologized tearfully.
