HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - One of two men killed in a sewer pump shaft accident late last week had ties to the Ironton area.

Brian Wilson, 36, of Huntington, formerly of Lawrence County, is being mourned by family here as a sweet man who cared about his family and his community.

Wilson was killed in a well Friday after going into a pump shaft to make a quick repair. He was apparently overcome by gases and fell from a ladder. A co-worker, Michael Wellman, 36, of Spring Valley, who tried to rescue Wilson from the pump shaft, died Saturday at St. Mary's Medical Center of injuries from gas inhalation.

A third man whose name has not been released was also taken to St. Mary's Medical Center for treatment in the incident.

Wilson and the unidentified man worked for Service Pump and Supply of Huntington. Wilson was born and raised in Ironton and was a 1986 graduate of Rock Hill High School. Family members, including a brother, two sisters and a grandmother live in Lawrence County. His funeral will be Friday in Huntington.

Wellman worked for Northern Wayne Public Service District.

Police said the workers had a gas meter that failed to warn them of the presence of gases.
