They want to make sure that Christmas is indeed merry and bright for some Lawrence County families.
The Lawrence County Domestic Violence Task Force and the Fraternal Order of Police Lodge 75
are joining forces this year for a toy drive. The toys will be given to needy children throughout the area. Lawrence County Domestic Violence Task Force Director Ruthanne Delong said last year's domestic violence task force toy drive helped approximately 275 children.
"Without us, there would not be a Christmas package under the tree for some children," Delong said. "And the gifts are from Santa. We want to keep the spirit of Christmas alive for these children."
FOP Lodge 75 President Pam Neal Wagner agreed.
"We're trying to do as much as we can," she said. "Given the economic conditions of the city and the county, some of us are more blessed than others. Some families have lost jobs. We want people to know that there is someone out there who cares, especially about the elderly and children."
The domestic violence task force is also having its "Adopt A Family" program again this year. Last year, sponsors adopted six families who are clients of the domestic violence task force. The sponsoring business, group or agency who agrees to adopt a family are given first names and clothing sizes of family members, as well as a wish list for children's toys. Delong said it is not expected that the sponsor will buy everything on the list, but it is simply a guide for the children's wishes.
"These women (domestic violence victims) are typically working in very low-paying jobs and cannot afford Christmas gifts for the children," Delong said.
The toy drive began this week and will continue through Dec. 12, with the toy giveaway scheduled for Dec. 19 at the Lawrence County Emergency Management Agency office on Park Avenue. To donate to the toy drive, you may contact Delong at 532-7111.
