When it meets Thursday, Ironton City Council will give first reading to a collective bargaining agreement between the city and the firefighters union.

When they met with city council finance committee members Monday night, representatives of the International Association of Firefighters 532 proposed an agreement that calls for a reduction of the clothing allowance and food allowance for each firefighter and requires firefighters to begin paying three percent of their retirement pickup.

These changes are meant to reach a mandated seven percent cut in the fire department budget. As part of the agreement, the firefighters will forego a wage increase.

Also on the agenda is first reading of an ordinance to purchase a MARCS radio system for the police department and third reading of an ordinance to purchase new dumpsters that are rented to businesses.

Also on the agenda are resolutions that would require the fire and police chiefs to pay two and a half percent of their pension pickup.

Council will meet at 6 p.m. That meeting will be preceded by two others are, an industrial and commercial development meeting at 5 p.m. and a zoning appeals board at 5:30 p.m. All of these meetings are in council chambers on the third floor of the Ironton City Center
