MERCERVILLE - Things were going okay, but coach Lisa Bryant thought it could be better.
So a few defensive adjustments at halftime helped the Symmes Valley Lady Vikings roll past the South Gallia Lady Rebels 61-37 Thursday in a non-league game.
"Their big girl (Julia Gwynn) hurt us the first half," Bryant said. "After we made a few adjustments, we did better the second half."
Symmes Valley led by 13 points at the half. After shutting down Gwynn, the Lady Vikings held South Gallia to 17 points the second half.
"We're starting to be a more balanced team each quarter," Bryant said. "We shot pretty well, but we had too many turnovers. We'd break the press, but then our halfcourt offense would turn the ball over."
Leslie Floyd scored a game-high 20 points and four assists for the Lady Vikings, 2-2. Rebecca Capper had 18 points, nine rebounds and eight steals.
Brigette Thompson grabbed nine rebounds while Kayla Saunders had five steals and Thompson four.
Gwynn scored 14 points for South Gallia.
"Were not real big and we didn't rebound as well as we should have, but all in all, we're starting to play well. They're very unselfish," Bryant said.
Floyd knocked down 7 points in the first quarter as the Vikings took a 16-11 lead.
Capper and Floyd combined for 14 points in the second quarter as the Lady Vikings pulled away to a 33-20 halftime lead.
Both teams scored 10 points in the third quarter to make it 43-30. Floyd and Capper scored 8 points each in the fourth quarter as the Lady Vikings continued to build on its lead.
The Lady Vikings play at Portsmouth Notre Dame Monday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.
