PORTSMOUTH - Okay, you did pretty good on your quizzes. Now, let's see how you do with a test.
After four lopsided wins, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers were facing their first big test of the season as they traveled to play the Portsmouth Lady Trojans.
Ironton coach Amy Hughes must have graded the performance as an "A-minus" after the Lady Tigers beat Portsmouth 60-49 Thursday to remain unbeaten.
"Portsmouth has a good team. We knew it would be a tough test for us," Hughes said. "We had a few turnovers early, but overall we played pretty well. This was a good win for us."
Andrea Rudmann scored 22 points, got four steals and had three assists to lead Ironton (5-0). Sara Hacker had 17 points and hauled down 15 rebounds to go with four assists.
Sarah Cartmell cleaned the glass for 14 rebounds - 12 the second half - as Ironton dominated the boards 51 to 25. Danielle Henderson added six points and eight rebounds while Mandi Boykin had eight points, eight rebounds, four assists and six steals.
"It was a great team effort," Hughes said. "We're learning our roles and we're playing well together. We did a great job on the boards."
Tonya McKenzie scored 19 points and Ali Hull had 15 points and five rebounds for Portsmouth.
The lead changed hands seven times in the first quarter. A 3-pointer by Rudmann gave Ironton a lead it would never relinquish at 12-10, and Hacker's 3-pointer helped stake Ironton to a 15-14 lead at the end of the quarter.
Portsmouth was within 17-16 on a put back by Faren Block. Cartmell then sank a foul shot, Hacker drained a 3-pointer and Cartmell hit a layup and it was 23-16. Hacker's 15-footer with 1:17 left in the half put the lead at 29-24 heading into the locker room.
Baskets by Hacker and Henderson and a 3-pointer by Rudmann stretched the lead to 41-27 and it was 43-31 at the end of the quarter.
A steal and layup by Rudmann with 3:50 to play gave Ironton its biggest lead at 57-42. Portsmouth closed to 58-48 with 2:23 to go on two free throws by McKenzie but another steal and layup by Rudmann with 1:55 to play sealed the win.
The Lady Tigers play Monday at Chesapeake.
In the reserve game, Portsmouth won 30-27 in double overtime. Ciara Taylor had 8 points while Nikki Harbolt and Rachel Walker scored 7 each for Ironton.
