PEDRO - Usually, students in Tamela Reed's Spanish class learn about people who live in far away places, and imagine what they lives are like.
Lately, they've been thinking about people closer to home, and imaging what it would be like to have no food.
Rock Hill students yesterday packed up 2,200 food items and donated them to the food pantry at the Church of Christ in Ironton. The students also raised enough money to buy Christmas presents for seven needy children - and did the shopping themselves.
"We know it was all for a good cause," Rock Hill junior Kayla Hankins said.
Hankins, who works at Pick 'N Save, said her job has allowed her to see firsthand that some people have a hard time making ends meet.
"I just want everyone to have a Merry Christmas," she said. "I hope this food makes it better."
"I am very fortunate," fellow junior Michelle Allen said. " I just want to think of others who don't have what I do."
When church members came to get the food, the students helped box it up and take it to waiting vans.
