PORTSMOUTH - The Coal Grove Hornets used one-way glass.

The Hornets controlled the glass as they outrebounded the Portsmouth Notre Dame Titans 36 to 14 en route to a 57-36 win Monday night.

Jimmy Lemon and Tommy Pemberton helped clean the glass as the Hornets improved to 4-2.

"Our post players did a nice job on the boards. To hold the other team to just 14 rebounds is a heck of an accomplishment," Hornets head coach Darrell Humphreys said.

Brandon Rymer scored 15 points and Lemon had 10 as the Hornets used a balanced offensive effort.

Matt Mader had 10 points for the Titans who were held to just nine field goals.

"The defense did a good job," Humphreys said. "To hold a team to 36 points and 14 came from the foul line is good defense by anybody's count."

Shane Bridges scored all seven of his points and Rymer got six more as Coal Grove jumped out to a 22-11 lead at the end of the first quarter.

With the defense holding the Titans to just two points, Rymer had seven more points and Pemberton got five in the second quarter as the Hornets opened up a 34-13 halftime lead.

Lemon put in six points in the third quarter as the lead went to 46-24. Jim Hankins had four points in the fourth quarter as the backups finished the game.

"It was nice to see some of they players who don't get as much game time get in and produce," Humphreys said. "Those guys did a real solid job. Jim Hankins scored some points and took a charge. And Aaron Fields hit a couple of free throws for us."

Humphreys was also proud of the fact the Hornets had just 11 turnovers.

"That's something we needed to do. From the second half of the Symmes Valley game on, our decision making has been getting better," Humphreys said.

The Hornets return to action Tuesday, Jan. 5, as they host Chesapeake in their Ohio Valley Conference opener.
