An alleged struggle between an Ironton man and city police officers sent one officer to the hospital.

Capt. Joe Ross was treated and released after receiving six stitches in his left thumb.

At 10:06 p.m. Sunday Ironton police were called to South Second and Pine streets, where they found Kerry Coleman, 26, of 317 Mulberry St., sitting on the railroad crossing.

“As officers arrived on the scene, Coleman was standing on the middle of the tracks and when he saw officers he laid down,” the police report states. “As officers were approaching Kerry he started running towards South Second Street. Officers told Kerry to stop running and that he was under arrest.”

Coleman then went to the home of a sister, where officers following told him he was under arrest. Ross began putting handcuffs onto Coleman.

At that point the man “pulled away from officers in an attempt to go after his sister,” the report states. “A struggle between Kerry and officers then ensued where Kerry continued to pull away from officers and kicked Capt. Ross in the chest.”

With Ross was Sgt. Brian Pauley who deployed a Taser at Coleman. Coleman was then taken to the Lawrence County Jail facing charges of railroad vandalism or criminal trespass, assault and resisting arrest.

He was arraigned in Ironton Municipal Court Monday where a bond of $15,000 cash or surety was set.

It was during the struggle that Ross was injured, the report states.

According to Police Chief Jim Carey, Ross will be off for six days. The city is assessing his condition to see if he qualifies for the city’s transitional workplace program where he would perform light duty, according to Katrina Keith, city benefits specialist.

“If (employees) stay in their normal routine, they are less likely to get reinjured,” Keith said.
