SOUTH POINT - What a difference two weeks make.

And some defensive intensity.

After losing to South Point 54-41 before Christmas in the South Point Ford Holiday Classic, the Fairland Lady Dragons rebounded to win the Ohio Valley Conference opener for both teams 37-34 Monday.

"It was a much better defensive effort. We played with some intensity," Fairland coach Nathan Speed said. "Defensively, we played well as a team."

The Lady Dragons were only 10 of 53 from the field for 19 percent, but they were able to limit South Point to just 12 of 44 from the field for 27 percent. Fairland was 17 of 33 at the line to the Lady Pointers 8 of 18.

"We didn't shoot well, but we told everyone to do their role and do what they can. We have a lot of kids who do different things, and we need to play our roles. But what we really wanted to do was play harder than we did before," Speed said.

Megan Fisher had 16 points, four assists and six steals for Fairland (4-4, 1-0). Brianna Davis also had 16 points while Tara Riley grabbed 15 rebounds and Kristen Berry had 10 rebounds and a blocked shot.

Alisha Bridges led South Point (1-7, 0-1) with 12 points.

Jamie Moore got four points in the first quarter as South Point took a 9-8 lead. Davis kept Fairland close with six points.

With Fisher scoring seven in the second stanza and the defense holding South Point to just two points, Fairland went up 18-11 at the half.

The Lady Dragons extended their lead to 28-18 after three quarters. Bridges scored nine points as South Point began a comeback in the fourth quarter, but Fairland was able to convert 7 of 12 from the line down the stretch including five by Fisher as the Lady Dragons held on for the win.
