Lady Tigers work their way past Lucasville Valley, 61-33

If Saturday's game was a movie, it would have been called "A Clockwork Orange & Black."

In workmanlike fashion, the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers toppled the Lucasville Valley Lady Indians 61-33.

Ironton played at a steady pace with an aggressive defense for most of the game. The only glitch was the third quarter when Lucasville Valley had 15 points, the only quarter it scored in double figures.

"We played pretty good defense the first half and we rebounded fairly well," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said.

"But our third quarter continues to haunt us. Even in our close games, we've been ahead at the half and played poorly in the third quarter. We have got to correct that."

Andrea Rudmann had 20 points and three assists to lead four players in double figures for Ironton (12-4).

Sara Hacker had 14 points, 11 rebounds, and three assists, Mandi Boykin got 11 points, four rebounds, and six steals, and Sarah Cartmell added 12 points and four rebounds.

Starter Danielle Henderson played only one quarter due to shin splints.

Mandy Merritt had 12 points and eight rebounds for Valley.

Leading just 6-4 early, Rudmann scored twice, Cartmell had a layup, and Henderson followed up a missed shot to open up a 14-4 lead. Rudmann's 19-footer before the buzzer made it 18-6.

Rudmann hit a 3-pointer, then converted a three-point play, and Boykin hit a 3-pointer as Ironton closed the half with a 9-0 run to lead 37-13.

Both teams scored 15 points in the third quarter. Rudmann and Hacker combined for 10 of Ironton's points.

"It's hard to maintain your intensity when you're up 24 and then you sit for 15 minutes, but we still have to find a way to pick up our level of play," Hughes said.

In the reserve game,Ironton won 31-28 in overtime as Tennielle Young score 12 points while Krista Markel and Shante' Lewis had six each. Brittany Weeks led Valley with 13.
