IIB to host flower sale fundraiser

IRONTON — Ironton In Bloom will have a fund-raising flower sale from 9 a.m. until 2 p.m. Saturday at the new municipal shelter and Farmer’s Market site at Depot Square.

There will be many plant varieties sold, including those that match the downtown floral displays and pots very suitable for Mothers’ Day gifts.

Come early for the best selection.

All proceeds go toward the beautification of the city.

 

Ritter Park Tennis Center set for grand opening

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — Help the Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District celebrate the grand opening of the new Ritter Park Tennis Center operation this Saturday.

The grand opening will offer juniors and adults the opportunity to celebrate the new and improved changes at the Center. The day will be filled with clinics, games, prizes and food.

A junior clinic will be 10 a.m. to noon and there will be opportunities to participate in tennis related drills with the opportunity to win prizes such as free lessons, rackets, balls, etc…The adult clinic will be 1 to 3 p.m. Free refreshments will be served from noon to 2 p.m. and there will a live DJ from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Participants will also have the opportunity to meet the pros, James Kent and Julie Ditty, at the opening.

If you are not interested in playing, but would still like to attend, bleachers are available courtside to watch the action. Volunteers for the day are also needed and greatly appreciated!

The grand opening is a great way to learn more about the sport of tennis, promote the sport in the community and spend some quality family time.

The center is located at 1571 Ritter Park Drive in Huntington.

Heritage Station to host Party on the Patio Friday night

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Greater Huntington Park and Recreation District is hosting the monthly Party on the Patio Friday at Heritage Station.

If you are looking for something to do Friday night, whether it is for a date night or spending time with family, then join us for live music, food and fun. Venders will be selling items such as Hawaiian shaved ice, kettle corn, soft drinks, beer and wine.

You are sure to feel at home with our live band. Big Rock and The Candyass Mountain Boys will be performing old jazz and blues songs. BRATCAMB is a funky, folky string band. The band will be singing old tunes such as Bessie Smith’s “Good Ole Wagon.” BRATCAMB tangles up old times and blues bringing a laid-back living room feel to any stage.

So come and party with the people of the Greater Huntington and Park District at Heritage Station. You are sure to have a good time!

Youth orchestra set for May concert

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Tri-State Youth Orchestra will have its annual Spring Concert at 8 p.m. Saturday, May 19 at New Baptist Church, 610 28th Street Huntington.

This concert completes the orchestras 14th performance season. This concert will feature a variety of musical styles including Danzas Cubanas and Stairway to Heaven, the London Philharmonic arrangement.

This concert is also featuring an original orchestral piece by the late Ron Caviani, Sr., father to the youth orchestra conductor Ron Caviani, Jr.

The Tarantella by Caviani is third in an orchestral trilogy written between 1990 and 1996.

The doors open at 7:30 p.m., admission is $5, children under 12 free.

Forest Service seeking applicants for youth corps

NELSONVILLE — The Athens Ranger District of the Wayne National Forest is now accepting applications for a four person Youth Conservation Corps (YCC) work crew.

The YCC crew will work on various projects to assist the district recreation program, including trail construction and maintenance; campground maintenance and trail bridge construction.

The crew will consist of four members (two male applicants, two female applicants). Crew members will work full-time for a period of eight weeks (June 18 to Aug. 10). To be eligible for the program, participants must be 15 to 18 years of age during the YCC work period (June 18 till Aug. l0).

Applications are due to the Athens Ranger District Office in Nelsonville no later than 4:30 p.m. on Monday, May 14.

Applications will be accepted by FAX (740-753-0119), email (csmacek@fs.fed.us), by mail or in person at the Nelsonville office at 13700 US Hwy 33, Nelsonville.

Selections will be made from a random drawing held on Tuesday, May 15 and selected applicants will be notified.

Selected applicants will be required to attend a meeting on Wednesday, May 16 at 6 p.m. to complete the hiring process (please bring state issued ID, Social Security card, and Direct Deposit information).

Greenbo Lake hosting weekend mystery dinner theater show

GREENUP, Ky. — It’s being labeled the wedding of the year at Greenbo Lake State Resort Park.

The park is hosting “Marriage, Mob and Murder: An Interactive Murder Mystery Party,” May 11-12.

A buffet dinner will be served and prizes awarded to those who help find out who did it. The show starts at 7 p.m. on both nights and is presented by Murder and Merriment Acting Troupe. The program is presented by the park in partnership with the Greenup County Arts Council.

Greenbo Lake State Resort Park is on KY 1, 18 miles north of Interstate 64 from the Grayson exit, or 8 miles south of U.S. 23, the Country Music Highway on KY 1. Greenbo Lake features the Jesse Stuart Lodge with 36 rooms, convention center and Anglers’ Cove Restaurant.

The park has a 225-acre lake for boating and fishing, tennis courts, and 25 miles of multi-use trails for hiking, biking and horseback riding.

The campground is open April 1 through Oct. 31. Greenbo’s amphitheater features musical concerts and plays during the summer and fall.

 

Local author to visit BCPL Saturday

ASHLAND, Ky. ­— James Anderson of Ashland, who recently wrote “I Saw God: The True Story of a Young Boy’s Miraculous Return from Death,” will sign copies of his book at Boyd County Public Library on Saturday.

Anderson will be at the main branch, 1740 Central Ave., from 2 to 4 p.m.

“I Saw God: The True Story of a Young Boy’s Miraculous Return from Death,” is about what happened to Anderson’s younger brother, Billy, after he was hit by a car while riding a tricycle in their Ashland neighborhood back in 1970. Billy survived, and told his brother and others that he had caught a glimpse of heaven and encountered Jesus.

Anderson’s book was released in April. Anderson said there is also some interest in making it into a movie.

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. — The Cabell-Wayne Coalition of Rotary Clubs (Barboursville, Ceredo-Kenova, Huntington, Milton) will sponsor a benefit concert featuring Landau Eugene Murphy, Jr. at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday, May 17 at the historic Keith Albee Theatre in Huntington.
