Standing under blue skies with a slight breeze, six individuals led a group of more than 20 people in a variety of different prayers on the National Day of Prayer.

“One Nation Under God” was the theme that people honored as they gathered on the lawn of the Lawrence County Courthouse Thursday.

Some people view the National Day of Prayer as an official holiday.

“It’s on my calendar every year,” said Hoyt Allen, associate executive director of the Kyowva Evangelistic Association. “I’ve attended the past 20 years.”

The crowd was noticeably small for such an occasion, which irritated Allen.

“This yard should be filled,” Allen said. “There shouldn’t be any standing room.”

The group that was present participated in seven different prayers. They prayed for the government, church, military, family, education, media and business. Before each prayer, a bible verse was recited that pertained to that particular topic. After the bible verse, the group read a short response from a brochure created by the National Day of Prayer Task Force (NDP).

According to the brochure, NDP’s mission is to mobilize prayer in America and to encourage personal repentance and righteousness in the culture.
