MINFORD - If this was a tune-up game, the Ironton Fighting Tigers have a smooth-running engine.

Kevin Williams and Dennis Gagai combined on a two-hitter as the Ironton Fighting Tigers routed the Minford Falcons 13-1 in five innings Thursday in the regular season finale.

"That was the kind of game you want to have going into the tournament," Ironton coach Mark Lewis said. "Kevin Williams threw really well and Dennis Gagai did a good job after he came in. We hit the ball well and played pretty good defense. Now we just have to keep the momentum going."

Ironton, 11-8, will host Chesapeake at 5 p.m. Tuesday in the first round of the Division III sectional tournament.

Williams went the first three innings and allowed just a leadoff double. He struck out five, walked two and the only run was unearned.

Gagai worked the final two innings giving up one hit, striking out two and not issuing a base on balls.

The Fighting Tigers wasted little time getting on the scoreboard with three runs in the first inning.

Williams doubled and scored when Josh Adkins reached on an error. Gagai and Josh Sands walked, Patrick Kouns hit into a fielder's choice as one run scored and a throwing error on the play scored Gagai.

The lead went to 5-0 in the second inning.

Brigham Waginger walked and scored on Williams' second double. Gagai walked with two outs and Sands singled home a run.

Ironton got four more runs in the third inning to lead 9-0.

Nick Collins beat out an infield hit and Dustin Preston followed with a two-run homer. An out later, Chris Collins walked and scored when Williams tripled. Adkins greeted reliever Wes Cordle with a base hit to drive in Williams.

Minford got its lone run in the third inning. Ryan McGraw walked, went to second on a wild pitch, took third on a ground out and scored when Jeremiah Blackburn reached on a two-out error.

But Ironton scored four times in the top of the fifth inning to set up the mercy rule win.

Chris Collins and Williams reached on errors and Adkins doubled home a run. Gagai singled in two runs and then came around to score when Chad Miller was safe on an error.

Williams led Ironton at the plate as he went 3-4 with two runs batted in. All three hits went for extra bases.

Preston was 2-3 with two RBIs, Gagai was 2-2 with two RBIs and Adkins went 2-4 and knocked in two runs.
