Does Ironton have an ordinance that requires residents to put their bags of trash in trash cans?

Vickie Browning, of 2431 S. Fifth St., told Ironton City Council Thursday one of her neighbors does not put the plastic bags of garbage in trash cans and instead sets them out in the alley where dogs and cats rip into them, scattering the trash.

“It looks like a mini-Ironton city dump,” Browning told the council.

“Are there any ordinances that require trash cans?” council chairman Mike Lutz asked.

City Health Commissioner Laura Brown said she would find out if the city has such an ordinance.

“This is an issue all over the city,” Brown told the council.

“Then lets start writing tickets,” council member Bob Cleary said.

Brown said she knows she has the authority to write citations and she will also find out if others in her office the can for garbage problems.

City council also suspended the rules and gave all three readings and then approved a contract to E.L. Robinson Engineering for the administration, construction and inspection of the North Ironton Sewer Separation Project. This is the first phase of a five-phase project to separate the city’s sanitary and storm sewer systems. This project is mandated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency.

Similarly, council also gave third reading to and then approved a contract with E.L. Robinson to design Phase II of the project. That phase will affect the area between Elm and North Fifth streets.

Mayor Rich Blankenship said negotiations continue with all three of the unions that represent the city on an effort to reach agreements for new contracts.
