Haynes, Hornets beat Raiders

BIDWELL — Being on top of his game left the Coal Grove Hornets on top.
Haynes threw a three-hitter and the Hornets beat the River Valley Raiders 10-2 Wednesday in an Ohio Valley Conference game.
“We played pretty well and Oakie threw pretty well. He threw like he’s capable of throwing. He’s a good pitcher when he’s on,” said Hornets’ coach Dean Mader.
Haynes struck out 10 and walked four in going the distance. He and Evan Ferguson each went 3-4 with a double to pace the offense. Haynes also stole three bases and drove in two runs.
The Hornets got a run in the first inning when Jake Murphy reached on an error, stole third base and Frank Delawder hit a sacrifice fly.
Jared Eldridge reached on an error, Ferguson singled, Drew Jenkins walked and Haynes had a 2-run single and it was 3-0 in the second inning.
Delawder and Justin Hern singled and Ferguson smacked a 2-run double in the third as the lead grew to 5-0.
Two more runs scored in the fourth inning.
Haynes singled, stole second and third, and scored on a passed ball. Wayne Sparks reached on a fielder’s choice and came around to score on a passed ball and two errors.
The Hornets build a 10-0 lead in the top of the sixth inning.
Haynes singled, Murphy walked and Sparks was safe on an error as the run scored. Delawder hit a sacrifice fly and the final run scored on a wild pitch.
Coal Grove (6-9, 5-3) hosts Fairview, Ky., Thursday.
