SCIOTOVILLE - When the Coal Grove Hornets get on a roll, they get on a roll.

The Hornets posted their third win of the season as they used a big surge in the second quarter to spark a 40-19 win over the Portsmouth East Tartans Thursday.

East scored in lightning fashion to open the game as Arthur Henderson returned the opening kickoff 93 yards for a touchdown and it was 7-0.

Coal Grove, 3-1, answered later in the quarter with a scoring drive capped by Justin Hyland's 1-yard run. Brian Massie ran for the conversion and the Hornets were up 8-7.

The Tartans kept the see-saw affair going the first half as Henderson used a 1-yard scoring run and it was 12-8 with 4:22 left in the half.

But Coal Grove began scoring quickly.

Patrick Roush got loose on a 53-yard touchdown run with 3:28 left in the half and Coal Grove was back on top for good at 14-12.

After gettting the ball back, Eric Davidson hit Roush with a 61-yard catch and run and it was 20-12 with 1:16 left in the half.

The Hornets recovered a fumble and turned it into more points as Hyland scored on a 1-yard run. Nick Bazell kicked the conversion and it was 27-12.

Neither team scored in the third quarter but Coal Grove took advantage of another East fumble to score as Jared Dever returned a fumble for a touchdown and the lead grew to 33-13.

East countered with a 23-yard touchdown jaunt by Brent Downing making the score 33-19.

But Coal Grove put the game out of reach on an 11-yard scoring run by Hyland and set the final score.

Hyland led the Hornets with 106 yards on 22 carries while Massie got 69 on 14 attempts. Roush added 53 yards on three rushes.

Quarterback Eric Holland completed 6 of 8 passes for 143 yards. The Hornets piled up 234 yards rushing and 377 total yards.

East, 2-2, had 200 total yards.

The game was moved up a night due to the heavy rain predicted for Friday.
