Proctorville man charged in shooting death

ROME TOWNSHIP - A Rome Township man was arraigned Monday on a voluntary manslaughter charge in Lawrence County Municipal Court in connection with the death of a Proctorville man.

David E. Jones, of 1121 Athalia-Wolf Creek Road, was arrested Sunday by Lawrence County Sheriff's deputies after a shooting at his residence. Sheriff Tim Sexton identified the victim was Roger Smith, 50.

Smith was pronounced dead of at the scene by the Lawrence County Coroner's office staff.

"The first call came in to the office at 5:34 p.m.," Sexton said. "Jones called and advised he had just shot a man."

The sheriff declined to say what might have precipitated the shooting, but said the two men knew each other. Sexton said there were no witnesses to the incident but that the investigation into the shooting continues.

Lawrence County Municipal Court Judge Donald Capper set bond at $100,000 and appointed Chris Delawder as Jones' attorney. Jones will return to court Oct. 4 for his preliminary hearing.

Smith's body will be taken to Columbus for an autopsy, Sexton said.
