The fate of an operational levy for the Village Coal Grove will be decided Tuesday. The levy supports the police and fire departments in the village.

“I hope it passes because it’s an operational tax that we really need,” Mayor Larry McDaniel said.

The levy had been collected for years before being voted down two years ago and again last year. In 2008, the levy was on the ballot alongside a vote for additional alcohol sales at various convenience stores.

“I know it’s been voted down twice and the first time it had alcohol on the ballot and that’s why it was voted down.” McDaniel said. “The second time I really don’t know what happened.”

The one-mil levy would cost residents with a $100,000 home $30.63 each year. It would bring in about $20,000 a year.

Village Clerk Debbie Fields explained that the ballot will indicate the levy is new, but that is because it was voted down.

“If we don’t have money in the general fund, we’re not going to have money to pay for police and fire protection,” Fields said.
