PEDRO — When the Rock Hill Redwomen stepped up, they were able to knock the Huntington Ross Lady Huntsmen down.
Brooke Hanshaw homered and drove in three runs to back the 3-hit pitching of Sami Nixon in a 4-1 win over Huntington on Wednesday.
“We started slow and picked it up,” said Rock Hill coach Mary Harper. “We had some kids step up. Kaelynn Ellis made some nice catches and Brooke Hanshaw stepped up at the plate.”
Nixon struck out 11 and walked just one to get the win for Rock Hill (1-1).
Rock Hill took a 1-0 lead in the first inning when Morgan Damron walked, Breanna Depriest put down a sacrifice, Chelsea Harper grounded out and a wild pitch scored the run.
Depriest, Harper and Hanshaw all singled in the third inning and it was 2-0.
After Ross got a run in the fifth, Hanshaw — who went 2-3 — provided some insurance with a home run into the foul pole following a walk to Harper.
Rock Hill visits Ironton on Friday.
