Lady Tigers win VB sectional

McDERMOTT — Don’t be too upset if the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers appear a little spoiled after getting their way Saturday.

Ironton outlasted the Portsmouth Lady Trojans in an exciting Division III sectional volleyball tournament championship match.

"They came out ready to play. They wanted to win the tournament and they did," Ironton coach Beth Freeman said.

Ironton beat Portsmouth 25-17, 28-26 and 25-21 to win the sectional and advance to the district tournament at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at Waverly High School against the winner of the Westfall and Lynchburg Clay sectional final.

Sarah Cartmell had a big match for Ironton with 12 points - 3 aces - and 6 kills.

"We were down 16-24 and Cartmell brought us back to a tie and gave us a chance to win it, which we did," Freeman said.

Andrea Rudmann added 9 points, 10 kills, 5 assists and 4 digs to the winning effort while Mandi Boykin got 10 points, 4 kills and 12 assists.
