LATHAM - Change is good.

The Symmes Valley Lady Vikings used a change in defenses to beat the Western Pike Lady Indians 62-39 Saturday in a Southern Ohio Conference game.

"We mixed up our defense very well tonight to keep them off-balance. It seemed to work," Lady Vikings coach Lisa Bryant said. "We got off to a sluggish first quarter start, but we did a better job in the second quarter and the second half."

Western took a 13-12 lead in the first quarter despite 6 points by Brigette Thompson.

Symmes Valley got untracked in the second quarter and rallied to take a 26-21 halftime advantage.

Thompson scored 6 more points in the third quarter as the lead went to 46-34 and she capped the game off by scoring 8 points in the fourth quarter.

Thompson finished with 22 points, 10 rebounds and two assists. Rebecca Capper had a big game for the Lady Vikings with 12 points, six rebounds, nine assists and five steals. Tiffany Bryant added 10 points and four rebounds.

"Brigette Thompson did a really good job for us. She hit the boards hard tonight and did a nice job down low on offense," Bryant said. "Capper played well also. Both Brigette and Rebecca played both ends of the floor well."

Kaylee Helton scored 17 points for Western.

The Lady Vikings play Trimble at 2 p.m. Dec. 28.

In the reserve game, Symmes Valley won 39-8 as Amanda Provens scored 16 points.
