PROCTORVILLE - King's Island has nothing on the Ironton Lady Fighting Tigers.
The unbeaten Lady Fighting Tigers continued their rollercoaster style of play with a 47-28 win over the Fairland Lady Dragons Monday.
"We're like the Beast at King's Island. We keep playing up and down," Ironton coach Amy Hughes said.
"We'll play really well for a spurt, then we play really bad for another spurt. And we keep playing that way throughout the game. We need to find some consistency in our play and maintain our intensity level."
Ironton outscored Fairland a combined 25-2 in the first and fourth quarters, but in between saw its lead spike at 16 and slide to as low as 6.
"Our defense played pretty well. Any time you hold an opponent to nine field goals, you've done a pretty good job," Hughes said.
The Lady Fighting Tigers started the game with a 12-0 run. Sarah Cartmell hit the first two baskets off passes from Andrea Rudmann and Sara Hacker capped the run with a layup and two foul shots.
A 10-foot running bank shot by Shay Berry at the buzzer got Fairland on the board and it was 12-2.
A short jumper by Jessica Waddle extended the lead to 16-3, but Fairland closed the gap to 20-13 at the half behind a 3-pointer by Megan Auxier and a layup by Kara Riley with 58 seconds on the clock.
Ironton started the second half similar to the first half.
Cartmell followed up a missed shot, Rudmann drained a 3-pointer and got a layup off a nice pass from Mandi Boykin, and Cartmell hit a 5-footer and the lead was 29-13 with 5:31 to play in the quarter.
But Fairland battled back on a pair of 3-pointers by Brianna Davis, one by Shay Berry, and a layup by Molly Bumgardner with 52 seconds left cut the deficit to 34-28 at the end of the quarter.
The rollercoaster began climbing again to start the fourth quarter as Hacker scored 9 points and Fairland failed to connect on eight field goal attempts.
Hacker led Ironton (8-0) with 15 points and six rebounds. Rudmann and Cartmell scored 12 points each with Rudmann getting a season-high seven assists.
"Cartmell did a nice job offensively for us. She didn't miss a shot," Hughes said.
Davis and Berry scored 8 points each to lead Fairland (2-5). Davis also had six rebounds.
