Even as a petite freshman at Rock Hill High School, Kelly Greco was already a star waiting to shine.
The Ironton area singer known for her voice and stage presence may appear on Fox Television's "American Idol" talent search reality show that airs at 8 p.m. today with the Cleveland auditions.
Family friend Melissa Blagg has known Greco since the singer was 14 years old. Even then, her talent was obvious, Blagg said.
"The first time I ever heard her sing was at a dinner her freshman or sophomore year. She sang 'Crazy' by Patsy Cline," Blagg said. "Everyone stopped what they they were doing and watched this little girl. She had this big, huge voice that came out of this little body."
"She has such a God-given gift. I knew she was a star."
Greco, a 22-year-old Rock Hill High School graduate, and her family are not allowed to talk about the show, but rest assured they will be watching though there is no guarantee that she will appear on television even if she advances.
More than 100,000 potential stars auditioned for the show's fourth season. Contestants must pass two auditions and then get by the show's celebrity judges that include the always caustic Simon Cowell.
Nearly 200 people from across the country made it through to the Hollywood rounds that will air Feb. 8,9, 15 and 16. To find out if Greco is one, you will have to tune in to see.
Regardless of what they judges say, Blagg knows that Greco will be superstar someday.
"I have been to the Country Music Awards in Las Vegas two times and she is every bit as good as a LeeAnn Rimes or Martina McBride," Blagg said. "Some of the others can't even hold a candle to Greco."
The daughter of James and Donna Greco, Kelly began performing at the age of 15.
Greco has appeared at many local events including the 2002 Ironmaster Days festival, Ashland, Ky.,'s Summer Motion, the Highway 23 Jamboree at the Paramount Arts Center and in Shawnee State University's musical, "A Tribute to Patsy Cline."
She was also a finalist for the USA network's Nashville Star.
Greco she spends her days as radiologic technician at Our Lady of Bellefonte Hospital, but hopes to have a new title to put in front of her name.
