CHESAPEAKE — The Chesapeake Lady Panthers got two wins Friday to put the final period in the Ohio Valley Conference softball championship.
Instead of a period, they used an exclamation point.
Chesapeake rolled up 15-0 and 25-0 mercy rule wins over the River Valley Lady Raiders to finish the regular season 16-7 and 9-1 in the OVC.
Led by seniors Allison Chapman, Sidney Boyle, Courtney Heffner and Casey Kirk who were all four-year starters, the Lady Panthers claimed their third straight OVC softball title.
“We’ve got girls who like to play and are willing to work. Anytime you have that combination you’re going to have some measure of success,” said Lady Panthers’ coach Aaron Rice.
Chesapeake had 14 hits in the first game including seven doubles and two triples. They had 17 hits in the second game that featured six doubles, three triples and a home run.
In each game, the Lady Panthers scored 11 runs in the first inning.
“It was like they were on some kind of mission,” said Rice.
Chapman got the win in the opener as she allowed two hits, struck out 10 and walked one. Boyle picked up the win in the nightcap.
Chapman was 8-for-9 on the day with four doubles and three triples. Sarah Mayo had a big day at the plate as she went 6-7 with three doubles and a triple.
Boyle went 3-4 including a double and an inside-the-park grand slam home run.
Heffner was 3-8 with three doubles and sister Caitlin Heffner was 3-4 with a double and a triple. Myky Harmon went 2-3, Kirk 2-6, Macy Allen 3-5 with two doubles, and Sarah Rice was 1-2.
Chesapeake will play at 5 p.m. Friday in the Div. III sectional tournament against the winner of the Portsmouth West-Portsmouth game.
