It is a time to thank farmers for the food on our plates.

This week is National Agriculture Week, designated to recognize the agricultural workers whose work provides food and fiber that feed and clothe the American people.

In honor of the week, the Lawrence County Farm Bureau will donate the book "Lily's Garden" to local elementary school libraries. The book was last year;s pick for the bureau's Children's Literature Award.

"This book is a great tool in educating youngsters on the importance of agriculture in a fun way," said Margaret Reid, farm bureau promotion education chair.

According to statistics from the Ohio Farm Bureau, each American farmer grows enough food to feed 129 people in this country and abroad.

"We hope this week will remind our consumers how important the American farmer and his job is to our daily lives," Reid said.

National Agriculture Week was first observed in 1973. It is officially recognized by the president, U.S. Congress and most of the nation's governors.
